Timber prices

Hi all just bought some timber here wow its got expensive.6"x1" pine is now $1.60/£1 per foot.And western red cedar is hold on to your hats $4.81/£3 per foot.Interested to know the price for prepared timber over in the States see how it compares to UK prices,any ideas folks.?

If I were you, I'd be heading to a graveyard of wood ships, and salvage some timber.

Hi ken ,i try to recycle alot of timber when i can.I get the impression timber there more readily available than the UK .And cheaper is that generally true Ken?

Bricks more expensive here Jens,we dont get termites maybe its too cold.We do get a small beetle called woodworm.Jens why are so many houses in the states built of timber?Especially if their is a termite problem.Is it cost?

I'm not familiar with the prices of lumber, in the UK.

I buy whats desirable for the project at hand,

and use reclaimed materials, as applicable, for misc products, and the like.

Reason is old retired brickmasons like me are gone  hahah .I have no idea cause brickwork here is really expensive  and the true craftsman just dont get opportunity do do as good ljobs as in past when you need to pay a union mason 30-40 per hour.plus bennies .Also to there is so much decrative brick that all you need is squirt gun and stick it on wall  and then tuckpoint afterwards.

Jens,

I've always admired the brickmasons and stonemasons work of art---

some beautiful structures were created.

It took lots of skill to construct those creations.

How did they do it in the days of the Romans, without using a Bosch HammerDrill & chisel?

Hi ken ,what i was after was the price of 6"x1" pine and the price of red cedar 6"x1"per foot in the states to compare with the uk prices that i posted earlier ,just curious cheers Ken.

6"x1" choice pine--- $2 per  ft

red cedar 8"x 1" ---$1.25 per foot

(local home depot $$$)

Lowes and Menards are also local, but I haven't checked their current prices.

I generally do that when I making out my material order list for the project.

For most projects, I buy larger/wider pieces and rip them.

Ex, it's more cost effective if I buy a 1x8, rip it, to make 1x4 aprons.

Plus, it gives me cut-offs for other uses.

Thanks Ken for those prices.Pine fairly similiar to here in the uk,but cedar three times as much here in UK .I guess somethings here in the uk cheaper,its all relative too where we live i guess.One item that is expensive here is petrol/gas £ 1.30 per litre about $2.30 roughly.60 per cent goverment tax.

Mike,

There is only a small volume of yellow and red cedar exported to the European countries---

perhaps one of the reasons for it's high costs.

Perhaps design and make your wood products from more readily available and cost effective lumber materials.
