First Project Nightmare!!!

Hi,

Small shop shelf. I got all my pieces cut out, sanded, put in my homemade 90 degree jig. Attached all the shelves to the right side of the storage shelf but when I went to pocket hole the second side on there was no way I could get to the pocket holes with my drill. the shelf is only 9 inches and the Kreg drill bit alone is at least 5 inches. So I ended up counter-sinking and drilling from the outside of the 3/4 inch plywood and naturally the plywood went to H...!

I should have used nails I guess. What do you do when your Kreg Pocket Hole Jig project is to small to get a drill inside of to put in the screws to the second side???

There are a couple different things you can do for this situation.  One is you can use a socket wrench and the 3" driver.  With this method you will just need to make sure that you follow the correct angle when driving the screw.  The second option would be to use a flex driver.  This allows you to use your current drill but brings it outside the box.  The last option would be to use a 90-degree drill.  This should give you more than enough room in your project.  Hopefully one of these options will work for you.  If you have any questions on these options, please let us know.

if you have an air compressor, I really like to use my air drill, it is very compact and powerful. You just have to be careful not to strip the hole by over tightening. you can buy this one at Harbor Freight Tools.

sorry to hear you had problems. really, kreg joinery is the bomb when it comes to simple, strong joints. i've had to be pretty creative also, getting into tight spots. usually i use on my right angle drill with a short bit to get into teeny tiny spaces. i didn't exactly need another drill, but ryobi makes really cool green tools ;-)

I ran into this situation this past week-end.  Fortunately, I had the pocket holes drilled prior to the assembly.  Getting into the tight spots to install the screws created the problem.  I have a Craftsman NexTec drill that is fairly small, that allowed me to get to most of them.  I also have a ¼" flex drive that allowed me to get into the tighter ones.  I do have a 90º angle attachment, but didn't want to remove the chuck on one of the drills to install the attachment.  I've also got some small ¼" finger ratchets that allowed me to get to the last couple.

Thanks Tim, all great ideas. I appreciate everyone's help on this. I bought a Genesis cordless drill, but I think my old rachets might have more power. I guess if I'm going to work like the big boys I might have to by some of the big boy tools. <grin>  Bill in Las Vegas

Quick-Change chuck adaptors, such as shown, or the like, can be inserted into the drill chuck,

for 1/4" hex driver tools/bits, and the like.

These smaller size chuch adaptors fit nicely in my drill press, so as to use with small drilling bits.
