My first project includes attaching solid oak pieces to veneer plywood.  Am I correct in assuming that I would use the Kreg screws with a finer thread?

George:

The table I just looked at lists "hard" wood such as cherry, oak, maple, and walnut works best with fine threaded screws.

Hi George, You are correct.  Bore the pocket holes in the plywood and screw the fine thread into the oak.  It is best to use glue on the joint as well.  Because of the glue making the joint slippery, a method I use is to aline the joint and then screw in a couple screws into the joint.   Then remove them apply the glue and then run the same two screws into same pocket holes of the joint.  Since the screw holes are there and in alinement before the glue was applied it is easier to aline the joint pieces.  Then finish off the screws with a lot less problem.

George,

Jay's advice is spot on (as always). His tip about driving a couple of screws and then backing them out before applying glue is a great one. You'll have a lot less hassle with final alignment.

Thanks Jay, and good luck George!

George,

Whenever making  glue connections between two pieces of wood, one must guard against excessive glue run-out, particularly when the finish on the project piece will be a stain or other clear finish.

Mask-off the areas surrounding the work-piece joint

a. Apply the tape, press firmly in place using a putty knife, or the like, after you install the screws---

(Pressing the tape firmly in place, will insure the glue will not enter between the tape and the work-piece).

b. remove the screws (as described above)

c. apply the glue--- (The use of an acid brush, or equiv tool, is handy to evenly spread out the glue).

d. re-install the screws

e. remove the tape

Makes for a nice clean look.

Works for me.

clamping the parts together really helps them stay in place

Free Hand Guard (dust collection)

Hi.  I'm wondering if anyone has used the Woodpecker Free Hand Guard for dust collection on their bench top router table during pattern routing.  How effective is it?  It's adaptable to any router table.  Continue

New Kreg 720Pro

I saw the video Kreg put out for this new jig and had high hopes for it.

I purchased one today and am very disappointed with it.

First the docking station is extremely cheap. The plastic is pathetic. A Lego has more…
