Ya get ready to get a new one but you my what to check your locking collar and see hal warn out it is you my beable to trun it over and use the other side becouse Kreg dosent sale drill bit and collar to gather. But if you need everything go out and get a Kreg-mimi it has the bit and collar and you can use all the exta mimi's for panls. It take's a good year to ware them out. Hope this help's

Probably a dull bit but I have noticed some fraying in pine and other soft woods. Kreg does offer a resharp service

thanks it was in pine and poplar and less noticable in oak but still there . odd it is only on one side of pocket hole.

I have to think about that some. I would expect it to be on your left as you are drilling the hole... I supposte the right side as you would look at it.

Even with a new drill bit, cheap birch plywood frays badly, because the top veneer is only a few mils thick.  Usually some fine sand paper cleans it up easily.  It is only on one side of the hole -- the side with the drill exiting the wood.

HI BERRY,

I'M NEW AT THIS, THIS MY FIRST REPLY, TO ANYONE !

IF,  ITS A DRILL BIT AND COLLAR YOU NEED, FIRST TRY HOME DEPOT, I JUST CAME FROM THERE, THAY HAVE IT.

ALMOST IDENTICAL TO KREG, APPROX. 1/4 "  SHORTER,3/8" DIM,  W/COLLAR AND KEY, FOR $9.95 ...

BRAND NAME "GENERAL".    FIRST, CHECK IT OUT!  HOPE THIS HELPS, ANY ONE IN NEED!

Wow, mine did this right out of the box.

It's been recommended to drill the holes at 2000rpm (min), for smooth boring operations---

(as recommended in the owners manual/instructions).

I bore my pocket holes at 2000 - 2500rpm, and have no problems.

I'LL check my speed but dont see that as a problem as the last time i tried varying speeds to see if that was the issue, Thanks

''Speed and feed'' is of utmost importance, in any machining operations, for satisfactory results, in all materials.

I dont no but I wonder if you put painters tape on and then drill through and see  if the splinting is resolved.Just a suggestion but I have really never had it happen to my pocket holes

Jens, have you ever put pocket holes in birch ply?  Last night I prolly drilled over a hundred pocket holes and they all frayed on the right side where the drill exits the hole.

I'm going to try painters tape on a few scraps, and see how that works.
