Table Saws - Be Careful

Article in latest Jan '12 Consumer Reports magazine states Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates 11 amputations a day and thousands of injuries each year from table saws.

The commission favors the Saw Stop technology while mfgs argue it's too expensive.

A couple weeks ago a guy (in his 30's) I know who has been a carpenter all his working life, cut an inch off his middle finger using a hand held skil saw.  Goes to show  they all require utmost attention when using.

I do not see specific mention of a new anti-kickback device.  Is this the saw that you mean:

Now on a more serious note, Table saws and any machines designed to "saw" will do just that.

Abuse or missuse them and you may suffer a minor or serious injury.

The Saw stop saga has been going for some time, and I do not doubt that it works and works well.

I know Bosch have something similar. Sometimes we all do "stupid" things/acts and suffer as a result but attempting to legislate it to be mandatory is going a bit far.

So now consider the future, here we are at whatever year and the technology has been introduced.

All of a sudden there has been a massive drop in the 11 amputations and thousands of injuries.

Table saws have dissapeared from WW shops showrooms due to prohibitive costs however the rise in laser and CNC injuries have !!

I agree, most of the wood working accidents are a result of misuse or abuse.

There's those who should not handle or use anything that is sharp!!!

Perhaps the drop in incidents, is a result of those people talking on a different hobby.

I have been working with all kinds of power tools ever since I was knee-high to a grasshopper growing up on the family farms. over the years, I'm now 71 years old, I have known many people who have suffered serious injuries while using power tools, especially saws, but I have never even come close to having a serious mishap. It has been my experience that those who suffer accidents fall into two distinct groups, the first is the rank beginner who never received instructions in how to use the tool properly and safely, the second group of people are the over confident users. It's easy for a seasoned user to slip into the latter group's way of thinking and we must continually remind ourselves that we need to follow all the safety rules that we teach new users to follow.

Here's info on Bosch's new GTS1041A REAXX™ Portable Jobsite Table Saw which will be available Fall 2015 according to Bosch's recent Press Release:

From what I read elsewhere, it will cost around $1,500 -- about the same as the SawStop Portable Jobsite Table Saw. 

I'm going to be buying a new 10" portable tablesaw in the next few months, but do not want to pay that much; so I guess that I will go with the Bosch 4100DG-09 10" Worksite Table Saw with Stand @ $590, unless someone has any other suggestions.
