Tight Spaces

Has anyone ever been in a project which has tight spaces, one where you can get the cordless into, other than a regular hand held driver what might be used, i am planning on doing some bird houses , some plain jane ones and others with a little bit more ginger bread but it looks like i wont be able to get inside to set the screws.THANX for time

Display Racks...

I play Native American style flutes and recently have learned to make and play cigar box guitars. I needed to make some displays for both types of instrumente. That's where the Kreg Jig came to my rescue. It made the build fun, and fast. "W.T."…

New cabinets for my workshop's "Tool Crib"

Over the recent holiday break I got out my hand dandy Kreg Jig and built 16 linear feet of tool storage cabinets for my workshop's "Tool Crib".

Here are the base units. Notice the pocket holes in the drawers;

Here are the upper units;

Here are the units painted and installed looking down the room to the left. Notice the pocket holes up under the… Continue

Rocking Horse

It was Christmas of last year when I was at my brother’s house celebrating with family. We were all sitting around watching the kids open their gifts. Near me was a rocking horse that my dad built for our youngest niece, Charli. I took the opportunity to examine how he made it, and what all went into it. My dad didn’t use the Kreg Jig for his rocking horse, so when I was looking at it, I was contemplating how I’d change it up to allow for pocket holes. I decided I wanted to try and build one of… Continue

Cracked Styles/Rails

Hello All,

I built a simple bookshelf style cabinet for my entertainment center and faced it off with 1x2 (.75x1.5) oak. Long story short, using the correct 3/4" depth setting and 1-1/4" fine thread screws, I cracked nearly all the joints, or the screw came out the side of the oak.

What did I do wrong?

Thanks,

D

half-way panic

Hi, I'm just starting out with woodworking, have made a couple of simple projects, but find I lose all confidence about half way through a project. Just wondered if others hit this wall, too.

"Do you want to build me something?"

I don't really remember what I was doing when my wife uttered those words to me, not that it really mattered, whatever is was it was dropped like a bad habbit and I followed after her to see what she wanted.

"I want a box with shelf to go here in between these two windows so I can get some of this stuff off the kitchen counter."

Out came the tape measure (there is one in the kitchen for just such an emergency). We looked and discussed overall dimensions and off the… Continue

Is using a Kreg Jig Cheating?

I have a friend who claims to be a traiditionalist. He would rather use a brace and bit, or scrape the varnish off with a piece of glass. His thoughts are that the best furniture was built without power tools. He will hand cut a dove tail, or mortise joint.

My argument with him is that "IF" power tools and tools like the Kreg Jig were available 200 years ago, they would have used them. I think they did what they did, because of what was available to work with. Its evolution, progress, or… Continue

I'm not normally a fan of old tools...

That's right, I generally prefer the newer shiny tools. I like fighting with that clear plastic vacuum packaging that is nearly impossible to open. I like holding the instruction manual and thinking "how hard can this really be.....?"

Recently, however, I had an offer from an extended family member to purchase a large lot of tools that were in her basement (she had just sold her house is moving south). I went over and looked everything over and walked away $100.00 poorer, but loaded… Continue

The Accidental Great Idea

A while back I swapped out my desktop computer for a laptop. I'm very happy with this decision, and kept my laptop on my desk in the other room for months. Recently, however, my roommate opted for wireless Internet and set it up. Now that my laptop can utilize his remote hub, I can take my computer into my room for more privacy, and I found I love this. The only problem I faced now was the fact that my laptop can get really hot on my thigh when I rested it on my lap. I knew I needed to build… Continue

Shop Funiture - Maybe the most fun thing to build

Shop Furniture creates no pressure on the builder, you can try new stuff if you want. You can build for you the way you think it should be.

I designed this to fit my little router table because the router table USED to live on top of the wood stove, but that became impracticle when the snow started to… Continue

Christmas Mission Accomplished

It might have helped that was $20.00 in the drawer...

Vanity Finished and What did YOU get for Christmas?

'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even in the workshop, cause the Vanity was finally done.

As it turns out our Christmas with the neighbors (and the little girl who is getting this piece) has been postponed a little bit (maybe tonight). We are very happy with the end result, just hope she is.

So for… Continue

It begins to take shape, 2 days until delivery...

Thanks to The Wood Whisperer and his advice on finishing, the base of the vanity is all put together and I think it looks great!

The mirror support got a final coat of varnish just this morning, and I set the actual mirror:

I had to set the mirror this morning so we can perhaps join… Continue

Two and a half days till it must be delivered...

The vanity is coming along. This has been a real collaberation between me and my wife and we have both worked on every piece of this unit.

I went out this morning and took a photo of the vanity as it sits with its first coat of varnish on it.

We used a dark walnut stain, which is a real departure for the look we both normally like, but is starting to look really nice.

Tonight I hope to hit this with… Continue

Second Cradle Project

In my neighborhood, there is a neighbor named Rachod. To look at him from a distance, you might think the guy is capable of tearing your head off without a second thought. However, once you get to know him, you find out that he's one of the biggest teddy bears ever to live in Oakdale. I quickly befriended him and over time, gotten to really know him. A few months back, he told me (first, before anyone else) that his wife Margot was pregnant. They don't have much in life, but are making do with… Continue

From Concept to Funiture....Almost

Our neighbor mentioned to my wife that her 9 year old daughter really needed a little vanity to start putting her girlie stuff, and seeing as its Christmas, and seeing as how I have this niftly wood shop, wouldn't it be nice if we could build something for her.

I went out to the shop Saturday late afternoon and put the top together (birch ply with poplar edging), and Saturday night my wife and sat down and sketched up some ideas:…

New Kreg 720Pro

I saw the video Kreg put out for this new jig and had high hopes for it.

I purchased one today and am very disappointed with it.
