Often my screws will come through the other side of the wood.  I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong?  I'm using a 1x4 and 1&1/4" screws.  I think 1x4 calls for 1&1/2" screws but I reduced the size hoping to eliminate the problem.  Still happens, though less often.  Any tips?

A 1x4 calls for 1 1/4 screws because the actual thickness of a 1x4 is 3/4 inch. Always use actual material thickness. Use Kregs handy screw length chart. There are 3 adjustments you also have to make to the Kreg jig according to the width of the material. I am thinking you have skipped one of the 3 steps. Watch Kregs video as to how to make the adjustments.

Great answer, Cheri.  CK, Cheri is right: a 1x4 is actually 3/4"-thick, so you need to use 1-1/4" pocket-hole screws.  You also need to make sure that you have your drill bit stop collar and your jig set for the same: 3/4", the ACTUAL thickness of your board.  Always go by the actual size, not the nominal (stated size).

For future reference, here is a chart with nominal/actual common board sizes:
And here is a chart to help you select the correct screw:

another thing to consider is they type of material that you are using.  if you are using something soft like 3/4" melamine, set the stop on your drill bit for 5/8" instead of 3/4".  it will still give you a nice tight fit but not stick out the other side.

CK,

Peruse the info, you'll find this very helpful.
