How do you paint wood furniture?

Hello,

I've built the framework for a bedroom dressing table out of softwood and was wondering what the best way to paint it would be to get a nice smooth even coat. 

I previously built 2 bedside tables and used a paint brush on those, but the paint doesn't look as good as I would like and it was a  bit laborious.  Also, as you brush on one side, you have to be careful to check the adjoining site to check excess paint doesn't create a line down its edge (probs not explained very well).

I've obtained excellent painted finish results, using suitable quality paint and a quality "long bristle" brush.

Prime the wood.

Top coat with a quality paint, that has is thin enough to flow fluidly and blend.

Apply in thin layers---two thin coats are better than one thick coat.

(Applicable thinning agents can be added to the paint to provide an even flow).

A long bristle brush with "feathered" ends.

Paint can also be applied by the spraying method.

Use painters tape along edges to obtain sharp crisp lines.

Some like to use the synthetic pads, to obtain a thin smooth coat.

As well as using a roller, mentioned by James,  and the type suitable for the type of material that is being applied.

One can also consult with the applicable paint manufactures recommendations, for their suggested practices for applying their produce.

There are also several sources available on finishing---books, etc.

PS---appyling paint, to obtain the desired results, just takes time and practice.

Apply the finish on some scrap pieces of wood.

Using a brush is all in the method of how the brushing strokes are applied.

Long light feathering strokes produce the best results.
