I have the K4 pocket hole jig. When I use it the right side of the hole is always ragged. It is not a big problem- just aggravating. Anyone got an answer.

before engaging the drill bit with the wood.

I received a response suggesting I run the drill at full speed before engaging the wood. It works like a charm.

no matter what I do this problem keeps happening. I get the drill up to full speed, go slowly through the wood or go fast through the wood.  I even bought a new drill bit. Still very ragged. ANY TIPS PLEASE!!!

Chip,

What's the RPM of your drill?

Bring the drill up to full-speed before making contact with the wood.

Does it produce 2500 RPM.

What kind of wood are you drilling?

Hello Ken,

Thanks for the questions

I bought a Rigid corded drill with an RPM of 2700 PRM after using my girlfriends cordless drill of 700 RPM. I didn't see any improvement.

On the other hand, The metal drill holes my Kreg R3 Jr. Pocket Hole Jig System seemed ti be very tight in the beginning and now there appears to be groves and an uneven edge in the plastic exit holes of the jig where the jig meets the wood. I tries sanding down the rough edges of the plastic holes but I still get ragged pocket holes. Any advise or tips, please?

Chip,

I'd like to see the condition of the drill jig, drill bit, drilled holes, etc

with the discrepancies you speak of.

It could be a combination of things.

Can you post close-up pics ?

It would be very helpful before I speculate further.

Thanks

BTW---I've drilled lots of pocket holes, with various Kreg pocket hole drilling jigs and bits,

and haven't had any problems.

However, whats to say some manufacturing defects may have occurred along the way.

Manufacturing defects can occur, by way of various sources; such as machining, molding, tools, equipment,

human error or lack of adequate training.

Here's a blurry pic of the bottom of my pocket hole jig with the ridges in the plastic holes.

Hi Chip, I have drilled a few hundred holes with my k-4 and the same bit, I use a corded drill and when I drill the holes  , I pull the bit all the way out and run it back into the hole the second time !!  And before I install the screw,s , I run my 5 " orbital  sander over the holes, with 100 grit paper , cleans up all the raged edges , some thing to try , works for me, JIM !!!
