 Micheal,

I have a dremel tool.  Some of the dremel packages come with cutoff wheels that are brown and they are not for cutting.  Ken, showed you one that is fairly new. They are called reinforced  cutting wheel. If you have an accessory panel where your wife buys the dremel; you could buy extra cutoff wheels because they get used up pretty quickly if you are cutting a lot of nails and screws. You could buy extra items if you run out of something. They have section were you could buy accessories here in the US. I don't know about the UK.

Dremel offers various types of cut-off wheels, in disc form.

The ''brown'' color cut-off disc is a very brittle material.

It does not flex---it can easily fracture.

It's an excellent material for specific uses.

Use caution when using this wheel---and by all means, wear safety glasses or perhaps a face shield.

If the disc explodes during use, and a small particle flying off from spinning at 25000 rpm,

could drive that small particle right into your eyeball.

(It'll bring tears to your eyes).

The reinforced cut-off wheel material, is made with a mesh base, with the abrasive particles bonded to the mesh.

This type cut-off wheel, is similar in construction to the industrial type cut-off wheels, that can be used in high-speed cutting machines.

Various types of cutoff wheels are intended for specific uses---

for cutting plastics, stone, wood, as well as metal.

The discs are marked, for their intended use.

The mesh disc wears rapidly, when cutting hard materials.

For some heavy-duty cutting, I'd suggest using an angle grinder, with and applicable suitable cut-off wheel.

Thanks leslee,i did have a little go with the dremel yesterday ,cut off some 1"alloy tubing for a little project i am makin.I was impressed ,i used the 420 wheels in the dremel cd it shows you can use two back to back.So i did worked very well.Yes it came with a chart to show the different applications for each bit. There is one downside the dremel did not come with a wood cutting wheel,i have ordered the speed clic system with the aforesaid wheel and different size colletts.Have a good day.

Morning ken,I am very careful ken when useing cutoff discs.I was in the construction industry for 30 years and was allways useing angle grinders and wall chasers. They did give us upto date training, even though i still managed to cut my hand with a 9"grinder resulting in 12 stiches oops.I have ordered the speed clic system ken ,and a wood cut off wheel and the metal cut off wheels you mentioned.I am very impressed with the little dremel overall ,the only downside is my youngest says it sounds like a very angry wasp ha.Have a dremeltastic week ken.

Mick,

The more you use the Dremel tool, the more uses you'll find to use it.

Akin to having a Kreg pocket hole jig, the more you use it, the more you'll find to build or repair  more stuff.

Thats cheap ken,the dremel 4000 $153 here in the U.K.

Mick,

Happy to hear you're enjoying your new tool.

I find the rotary tools can be use for almost any hobby or DIY project, as well as for repairs.

Mine is always out on the workbench, for at-the-ready access.

A cordless version, always goes with me to a job site.

I think the Fein MultiMaster would work better for screw or nail removal.  Just my thought.

Mike,

Please define how would the Fein tool work better?

A $300 Fein oscillating tool ---plus--- blades at $30 - $100 each! ---

vs a $100 rotary tool with a $.50 cut-off wheel, for the menial task described?

I've evaluated the Fein tool---can't justify the expense for intermittent and light-duty use.

Mick,

It's not ''cheap''--- it's less expensive.

There are various Dremel 4000 series rotary tool kits,

that range in price from $79 to $185.

Some kits include more accessories than others.

I you plan to use all the accessories, then it's more economical to get the high-end set with all the accessories.

Buy the time you piece meal it together, it'll cost more.

Ex:

Dremel 4000-6/50 ($185) Kit Features:

  • Slim, ergonomic body provides a 360-degree grip zone for comfort and control in any grip position
  • High-performance motor for maximum performance at all speeds
  • Electronic feedback for consistent speed under load
  • Variable speed for greater versatility
  • Planer attachment
  • Flex Shaft attachment
  • Circle Cutter/Straight Edge Guide
  • Sanding/Grinding Guide
  • Multipurpose Cutting Guide attachment
  • Detail Nose Piece
  • Lawn Mower and Garden Tool Sharpening Attachment
  • Storage Case
  • Includes 50 genuine Dremel accessories
  • Quick Start Book

Many items included in this kit, that are not with the smaller basic kits.
