Power cord

My Father In Law gave me his old Skil Saw Model 554 from what I can tell it is from the 1950s or 1960s it needs a new power cord. Can I use a cord for a new skill saw or would it be a model specific item? if I need a cord for that specific model where can I find one? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Must be pretty old, google couldn't find that model number. That saw probably requires a ground lead, double insuluation hadn't come along yet. You could probably adapt a cord from a newer saw as long as the electical specs are at least equal. Might even be able to adapt a heavy duty extension cord to it.

By the way, what's the matter with the old cord? If it has been purposely cut of, the motor is likely shot. Many tool repair and electical repair shops will cut the cord on defective motors before tossing them.

I would go with a heavy duty extension cord same gauge wire as is on the saw now crimp some lugs or sodier lugs.

If you're not experienced with electrical/mechanical tools,

I'd recommend taking the saw to an authorized servicer and have a proper cord installed.

If any electrical/mechanical components are improperly installed, it could result in personal injury---

you won't need that.  

Electrical power tools can be dangerous---improper connections and grounding could result in electrocution.
