Please forgive the typing above. Entered it with my cell and fat fingered my question to death. Hopefully someone can still figure out what I'm asking.

I would suggest that the screws you are using could be too short.  Another possibility is that you are trying to use "hardwood" screws, i.e. with more compact threading, to fasten into a soft wood, such as pine, and the screws are tearing out the soft material.

Does the drill you using have clutch settings? In the image below the drill has numbers on it that adjusts the clutch in the drill. This determines how much torque is used to drive the screw. When a certain torque is reached the clutch kicks in and stops drilling the screw. You just have to adjust the number till the screw is sitting correctly in the hole.

For me it can be from 1 to 5, but it depends on thickness of wood and type of wood like soft or hard.

Are you using actual pocket hole screws or just regular wood screws? Are you using coarse threaded screws for soft woods and fine threaded screws for hard wood? Are you using the correct length screws for the thickness of the wood you are joining? Also, as James mentioned,  does your drill have a clutch? If not, get one that does and start with it on a setting of 2 or 3 at first.

Stephen Nick, and James thanks working much better. Appreciate the help.
