Just built this today. I based it off the plans from Ana White located here: http://ana-white.com/2012/03/plans/kentwood-bookshelf. I scaled it up to about 72"x36". I used a brad nailer and wood glue for the top and back planking, everything else was pocket-hole joinery. I still need to sand and stain it.

A unit that tall will need to be anchored securely to studs in wall, or the like.
REASON: It's top heavy, and when loaded with merchandise, it'll topple over,
and cause injury to persons or property.

I have already built a dvd rack which is basically a miniature version of the bookcase and I am currently working on a patio cooler (thanks to Dan for the inspiration) as a gift for my in-laws.

Leaving the holes open, on finished surfaces, allows dirt and dust to accumulate.
Plugging the holes, allows for easier cleaning.
Spiders like those little nooks to build nests.
