Kreg Owners' Community

I'm building a recessed cabinet/shelf unit in my bathroom, going 12" into an oversized space that the previous owners created for the bathtub plumbing. The final dimensions will be roughly 40" tall, 18" wide, 12" deep.

I want to put in adjustable shelves. What is the easiest/best way to do this?

I might be a little bit biased, but...

Are you trying to build the cabinet in place or build a cabinet to fit in the space?

The easiest way to put in adjustable shelving would be shelf standards. The downside is they show more prominently than shelf pin holes but, IMO, are more suited for heavier duty shelving. Very quick to install, just run two dados down each side and screw them down. Don't really need the dados either, I've seen some just notch the shelves.

Here's a better link as it shows several lengths. 40" cabinet would use a 36" standard pretty comfortably. Looks like 4 standards and clips should run under $20.

I purchased a piece of plastic pegboard material 4x8, and use it to place the holes with a centering bit.  If you are going to put the holes in the cabinet in place, you can cut the plastic to fit your dimensions and then drill the holes.

Hope this helps.  Bill
