Jens,

A large pillow could be propped-up to cover the exposed holes,

or elevate the mattress.

Jens,

Minwax advertises a stainable wood filler.

Have you tried Durhams Putty/Filler?

http://waterputty.com/repairs/

I've used this material, for many years, with satisfactory results.

Colorant can be added/mixed into the powder.

Yes they make great workbench and glue up stations My nephew used 4x4's and glued plus through bolted a 4 foot wide table ran each pc through planner so he has a perfectly flat top and the built 4x4 frame and added drawers. Must weigh 500 -600 lbs

Jens,

Clever use of recycling old doors.

I got some old doors, from rehabs, cut-up the sections and recycled the old lumber.

Sure comes in handy for several other uses.

One big 'ol door was 2'' thick and clear ''pine''.

Flat doors make for nice work surfaces.
