Kreg Owners' Community

Someone mentioned that Kreg has now come out with a Phillips head/square head combo.

That's great because I've been trying to find (locally) a stubby square head screw driver (3 1/2" long) for use in tight spaces, with no success.  Now  with this new combo head, a readily available stubby Phillips screw driver will work.

Side Note:  That darn Menards just raised the price on the screw variety kit from $22 to $30.

I bought a few recently because I like the case.  I got 3 before the price increase.  I think I got enough.

Hi.. It's strange Menards wouldn't carry 3-1/2" square drive. I've bought them at home depot and ACE. Combo drives are nice in a pinch. We used them at the furniture factory I worked in some time back. The square drive is the more positive of the two and my recommendation would be to only remember the phillips backup when in a bind...

Information from a previous post...

Regarding the screws, we haven't made the official announcement yet… but we will be transitioning to an exciting new drive style over the next year. This new drive style works exactly the same as our old square drive heads, but better. Your existing square drivers will work just as good as they ever did, but as an added bonus, if you can't find your square driver you can also use a Phillips head driver in a pinch. It's the best of both worlds... the quality engagement of a square head, and the compatibility and convenience of a Phillips head.

So, to recap...

  • The new screws provide 100% optimum engagement with your existing square drivers. The driver to screw engagement will be the same or better than with the old drive style.
  • You now gain the ability to use 'Phillips in a Pinch'. If you can't find your square driver, don't worry... you can still get great results using a standard #2 Phillips driver.
  • This rollout will be occurring over the next year. There's more to come, so stay tuned as we continue to make Kreg screws even better!

Thanks for the great question!

When using a ''philips'' head driver, it is highly probable that ''stripping'' of the screw head will result.

If the screw head is damaged, you may not be able to remove the screw.

DO NOT use a phillips head driver on any recessed screw head.

The ''square'' drive is the way to go.

Someone that will use a ''phillips'' tip driver, and strips out the screw head,

will be complaining of Kreg producing inferior products.

There are several varieties of phillips driver tips---

too many, on today's market are inferior and of low quality.

The cheap ones are useless---they'll damage a screw head  very quickly.

I'd suggest Kreg discontinue offering screws with a phillips head feature,

and offer the ''square head'' only.

More positive results will be achieved.
