Correct screw length for this joint

I'm going to join 2x4's, such that the pocket holes will go into the 3.5" side of one piece and this will be attached to the 1.5" side of the other piece. I know that if the 3.5" side was going into…Continue

"When working with hardwoods it is best to be prepared to start with a pocket hole as usual. But when a danger of a split might be apparent, using a bit that is slightly smaller than the pilot hole with a stop collar to prevent over drilling. As…"

"Removing mechanical fasteners from the equation, e.g. screws of any type, then you are comparing the strength of two joints:  (1) a "butt" joint, where the end grain of one board is joined to the face grain of the other board, and (2)…"

"I may be misinterpreting this, but if you use a miter joint, and place the pocket holes on the inside (to conceal them), then the screws are angling away from the face of the piece being attached, and that face is angling away from the screws, so it…"

Strength difference between pocket hole joint and miter joint?

When joining 2x4's at a 90* angle, how does the strength of a pocket hole joint (end grain of one board connecting to face grain of another board) compare to that of a mitered joint (both boards cut to 45* and joined)?  Seems both joints have screws driven in at an angle to the grain - not parallel to the grain (weakest), and not perpendicular (strongest), but somewhere in between. Are they fairly similar from a strength perspective? Any reason to choose one or the other if you have the tools…See More

HI Joe , welcome to the community , I noticed on your profile  that you do not have a KREG Jig, the K4 or K5 are both good depends on what you want to build !! I have the K4 master set and it work,s good for me , as I have drilled many pocket holes in the last few years  and have never drill a pilot hoe in either board !!   Make sure when you get your jig you also get a face clamp and a 90 degree clamp and you should not have any problem,s , clamping is very important to get a good tight joint , I also have a good selection of bar and pipe clamps that will help !!  Have a good day and happy wood working , JIM !!
