The maple's not too hard to work with, but the glue they use to make the laminations is pretty tough. Plus there's a lot of sugar in the wood, so there was a lot of smoke. Overall, I'm really happy with it. It creates a really rugged surface to work with. I had to predrill all my screws, otherwise the screw would make it about 3/4" in before snapping.
