Workbench top

One project to complete and I can build my new workbenches.  I have been looking at several plans for awhile and have all construction set except for the tops.  I will be making two benches with tops…Continue

Table saw tolerances

When cross cutting on my table saw I am not getting ninety degree cuts.  For reference I am using the Craftsman version of the Rigid model R4512 saw, and my miter gauge is an Incra 1000HD.So far I've…Continue

Faux Finish Question

I am trying to mimic the finish on the metal plates behind the drawer pull in the attached picture.  This is on a china cabinet we purchased decades ago as part of a dining room set.  I am currently…Continue

Don Foley replied to Brian fleming's discussion 'New project rustic barnwood bar top'
"Brian, Since you did not glue the planks together to form the tabletop I suggest removing the bowed piece, drilling new pocket holes and before re-installing it use cauls or some other form of  forcing the bowed board flat.  Then reattach…"

"Brian, I also forgot to mention above, as for mounting the top if you have room use pocket hole screws.  Drill the holes in the base cabinet so the screws go upward into the top.  I built a side table awhile back and posted it in the…"

Don Foley replied to Brian fleming's discussion 'New project rustic barnwood bar top'
"Brian, From reading your post I assume you already have built the top, meaning the bowed board is already included in the bar top.  If so did you edge glue it to other boards or use mechanical fasteners such as pocket hole joinery to make the…"

"Dana, The Porter Cable 690LR available from Rockler runs $159.00 (slightly higher than your $130 budget) but includes both 1/4 and 1/2 inch collets.  Lowe's offers the 690 LR for slightly less at $149.00.   I own two of the 690…"

Don Foley replied to KregRep's discussion 'Free Plan: Miter Saw Dust Hood'
"Thank you.  I attempted to build a dust hood for my miter saw once but unfortunately made it too small to use at 45 degree angles (not enough clearance).  The good news is it works perfectly on my radial arm saw. Don"

Arched Top Steamer Trunk Plans and Tutorial

Attached are the drawings I used to build the arched top steamer trunk which I recently posted in the projects section.  Also attached is a step by step tutorial as best as I remember building it.  (I built this project several months ago, but only recently posted the pics) Please forgive me if upon reading the tutorial it seems too basic.  I am hoping it may guide new woodworkers not only in how to build this project, but give them an idea in how to design and build the project of their dreams…See More

Don Foley replied to Don Foley's discussion 'Workbench top'
"Thanks Tim and Michael, I'm leaning toward a glued up top with two major concerns.  Solid maple is quite expensive and most of my shop projects are built from scrap or construction grade lumber, I guess I'm cheap; and construction…"

"I used ¾" plywood over a hollow core door.  That gave me a flat surface on which to work.  The hollow core door acts as a torsion box.  I mounted a couple of T-tracks running the 7 foot length at 1/3 & 2/3 the width,…"

Arched top steamer trunk

"Bill, Alder is on the lighter and softer end of the scale when it comes to hardwoods.  It works and finishes similar to Pine.  However, the chest still has some weight to it, since it is constructed from solid glued up 3/4"…"

"That is beautiful.  And looks very useful.  Wondering about weight.  Is it heavy?  Are boards 3/4"?   Is Alder a dense / heavy wood or fairly light (I could look that up but figured you could comment for all to learn)?…"
