How are the results when staining such a combo do they match?  Carcuse frame real hardwood. The insided sheathing and shelves made from plywood red oak.

I've used both with great success, in most cases you can't tell the difference. I think the biggest thing is how you finish it and how well you match up the grain. If you take a look at most kitchen cabinets these days, the vast majority of the oak one you see will have solid oak trim, edging and doors, however the bulk of the cabinet is nothing more than oak plywood and in some cases particle board.

Take a look at my entertainment center project. i used 3/4" red oak plywood along with red oak 1x and it turned out great using the minwax poly shade, pecan gloss.
The top on th entertament unit is that a solid 2 inch top or banded?
