You can use what's sometimes called a straightening jig - essentially a long sled to which you temporarily attach the board, then rip it on a tablesaw. That'll give you an edge from which you can work.

Now let's say the ends of the board aren't square, and neither are the sides. How would one go about squaring a board that's all out of whack?

It's not only the home centers, as noted, that don't have square ends---
