Jerry,

I like the die cast model car case that you built! I've been trying to design one myself and you beat me to the punch. Would you be willing to share your material list with me?

Thanks,

Mack

Tomboy,

I built my first mill so I could supply my dad with wood for his shop.  Then he got Parkinson and that pretty much ended his wood working.  So he comes over to my shop and helps with what ever he can and I enjoy having him.  He was a great wood worker.  So now I have two different mills for the types of logs I get.  When I mill anything over 2-1/4" I have to let it dry for a minimum of two years.  At the rate I have been milling I will never run out of wood.  If you can ever get someone who has milled any European Elm, take it!  It is great wood to work with and has great figuring.  Once you start milling, it opens up many opportunities to use woods that even some wood suppliers just don't have.  Thanks for stopping by.  jerry-

Jay,

Thank you for the info. Do you pull a vacuum on your resin before you apply it to your cavities to reduce any bubbles? I think it's a great way to make wood destined for the fireplace or worse and put it to good use. I have milled some nice pieces of wood that could have been saved by using your process. Do you has a specific brand of resin and black stain you prefer? Thanks again for the info.

I just go a line on a 12" stump by 40" wide black walnut tree to mill. I'm in heaven!

HI Jerry, In answer to your question about the wood. It is hickory of what we call "calico" getting the name "Calico" from the mixed colors of the heart wood and the sap wood. What I did here is to use the roughest wood I could find for defects. I have been using a epoxy resin with a black stain to fill these defects. I purchased the wood from a lumber dealer buying the thickest I can find and then mill it to 13/16 " I have used this epoxy trick on almost all species of wood of which the best have been pine, hickory and cherry birch and maple. The results are two fold, you get a stricking piece of wood that is strong for the price of trash wood. Most figure the wood to be throw away, which I find to be treasures . I looked at your page and you have some very nice projects as well.

I don't have plans, but I will try to explain as much as possible. It started out as an Idea, I did draw some sort of plans on an old cad program that will only print to a dot matrix printer. The cabinet itself started out as Melamine 5/8" as 3/4 is hard to get here and weighs tons. I'd switch to plywood G1S. . Beside which Kreg screws like ply better and it is easier to edge with iron on wood tape. The starting dimensions are approx 18" x 31 high x 27 long before I applied face frames of birch (1 1/2 x 3/4). The legs are 3/4 x 2" birch, the height with wheels is same as cabinet on wheels. As you can see, the legs 1 1/2 x 2 close to the wheels just to accomodate the caster pads. That means that when folded , your table hinge has to come out 1 1/2 inch away from the cabinet just to fold flat. @ birch blocks were screwed to the cabinet in two places and a gate hinge was used to hinge the top. Top is 40 x 72 before I routed to edge it with birch. I can explain this much better in conversation and you may call me direct @905-885-6122 if you wish. I wasn't quite sure how to prevent the table from swinging up while moving (slightly folds to the upright position) but a frien a friend of mine suggested one of the powerful rare earth magnets so you don't have to bend over to unlock anything.
Oh by the way, I am about to post pictures of the Murphy wall bed I've been working on the lastlittle while.

The snare I have is one given to me by Joe Morello in 1971. I still have the original Leedy Snare that came with the kit. I play in a band so the kit is used every week.

As for the wood I mill. I have shop in my backyard that I do my woodworking in so having a supply of various types of wood to use in the future is why I'm milling. Milling is so much fun. Every tree I mill is like opening a new present. You just don't know what your going to get from each slab. In my picture I milled 24 slabs of of Pacific Coast, Black Oak. I'm going to mill a big Maple this coming Wednesday. More fun!
