I can only echo, what others have said.

A great looking piece of work.

You're a very talented wood crafter.
It sure is a great feeling, when things go together, as planned.

Thank you Robert for the nice complement on the table.  I am glad that I have inspired you to complete your project as I know you can master it.  It just takes patience and accurate saw and material prep.  Everything must be exact on, or you will soon find the error during the glue up.  The black epoxy I am refering to is an epoxy resin that I add a dye to and a catalyst hardner.  I use it frequently to do inlay work with as it takes the place of ebonies and gives a ultra jet black inlay.  The draw back is that the enlay cut must be exact as the black epoxy will find and reveal every little imperfection and flaw in your work.  What I finished the hickory table with is a catalized lacquer that gets hard as nails and is very scratch resistant.  It also give your a very nice finish without the shine like a mirrow yet shows all the wood grains and brings out the color in the piece.  If I am trying to build a piece of furniture that is of a different color I have been known to use automotive lacquers and then top coat with the same catalyzed lacquer.  One of my favorites for this is using black in general motors tuxedo of the 1960 vintage.  It is about as black as you can get and flows out very nicely.  This method adds a whole new world of color to the choices other than stains.  If I want a colored transparent finish I use the alcohol based dyes and then coat again with the catalized laquer.

I am building the legs for this table at present time and the method I am using is duplication of the angles but keeping the back of the leg square to the back. This will allow me to add the bottom shelf. Questions???? feel free to contact me.

Hello Jay,

I can only echo the comments from others a very well constructed project.

I made a similar table however not as complex and it was a test of my patients just to get the angles right and to present a finish I was happy with.

Its an ongoing project that I did purely to see if I could.

Ist in the Photo gallery some where, but yours has imspired me to dust it off and continue.

I finished the top but as it was a "experiment" I could not think of how to do the frame and legs so it got shelved for other more important and less interesting work.

I am interested in the black epoxy effect you intend using.

I have some West systems proudcts but have been reluctant to use it for fear of spoiling a project at the near completed stage.

can you tell me more or where to go looking for the pluses and minuses of using such a product with wood (apart from the routine safety considerations)

Regards

Robert Brennan

Thanks Ray for the nice words of comment.  It is a fun project and wish I could actually spend some more time doing this sort of thing.  This is another one of thoes projects where the customer wants something but has spent alot of time shopping without finding anything suitable for the purpose in mind.  The idea of this is to sit it under a window against the wall for a plant or other object.  It is something that they didn't want it to be round or square and or a triangle so it leaves about one form left, and that is as I have built it.  Once I finish the woodwork and apply the clear coat it will really pop.

 Have a great summer!!!!
