 I think your headboard is cool. I also think leaving the hole for the doorknob was is a good character feature for the headboard. It shows the usefulness of recycled wood like old doors and etc.

I find these very useful tools for inlays.

Jens your headboard is nice and certain to draw a lot of interest from thoes whom like to recycle and collect old things.  Would't it be nice if that door could talk abou all the thing it has been through.  Just having a door of this vintage would be exciting but making it into a bed frame headboard is craftsmanship and artistry all in one package.  I do like the way the stain turned out as it makes it look old and brings out the charm of the old wood.  Nice job and thanks for recycling lumber and for showing your work.

Optional Fix to hole(s) in door:

1.  Add a ''filler plug'' in the holes.

a. size and material to suit

b. make flush

c. finish

 

2. Install an inlay over the plug.

a. add a plug suitable to fit hole---face of plug recessed, to allow for inlay thickness

b. install and secure inlay.  

Make the inlay, to match the wood grain, direction and finish. 

I've used option 2, and achieved great result.

(repaired hollow core doors that were damaged) 

A suitable template can be used, to make perfect routed holes in the doors surface, so as to facilitate the inlay.

Make an inlay pattern to suit, and it can be made made from:

a. veneer strip or sheet material, or

b. trim the top layer from a piece of plywood material.

(shave off the top layer with a chisel---smoothen back side), or

c. rip a thin strip from suitable material.

Jens,

I generally use the Durhams to patch holes and smooth depressions.

I haven't made added colorant to this material, in some time---

since Minwax came out with their stainable wood filler.

I'll do some experimenting with adding colorant to the Durhams filler.

Colorant needs to be added while it's in the powder form---

before it drys hard.

Tried Durham and it is not stainable. I have used that for years ever since I was a youngin
