I went for many years without dust collector (dust pan and broom) then I saw a ad from Harbor Freight for a 1-1/2 horsepower with a I think it is a 5 micron filter it could be a litter tighter weave and it sells for 249.00 I got it for 139.00. They usually run a ad in Wood Magazine

I do have a dust deputy and it makes a big difference on shop vac longevity. I, too, discovered my bucket full rather quickly with the surface planer. I've kinda been putting off setting up a dust collection system. There are many out there, but I just want to make sure what I do will work properly and collect even the finest particles. I keep my work area small (no bigger than 2-car garage) and have a storage overflow area for finished product. I am still in research mode, though. I found someone who actually studied the systems out there to the science. He provides plans to make a nice cyclone system, but until I actually get around to it, this $26 system shown above feels really good in my pocket. Thanks gents.

I purchased one of these approximately 8-10 years ago when I purchased a 1HP dust collector. At first I was not too thrilled with it, it worked fairly well on the table saw and other things, but it could not keep up with my surface plainer. I disconnected it and used just the dust collector and realized it was not the cyclone, but the dust collector.

About 5 years ago, I bought a 2HP Grizzley collector, what a difference. I now have no problems keeping up with the surface plainer and and works better with the table saw and other tools. As to the question how much goes into the can instead of the collector bag, it depends on what you are collecting. On the surface plainer I would say at least 95% goes into the can, Table saw and router table about 80%, downdraft sanding table about 50%. It is designed to keep the larger particles out the collector and into the can.

As to the question does it work with a shop vac, not well, the hoses are 4" and not enough air volume is drawn through the hose to move larger particles. I even tried using an adapter to change hose sizes to fit a shop vac and was not satisfied. This unit also comes in a size made for shop vacs that fits on a 5 gal bucket. It works well on all tools with a shop vac except the surface plainer, too much volume of chips and the bucket fills too fast, this unit is available on Amazon.Com. Also Rockler has a unit similar, I cannot comment on it as I haven't ever used one, and it is more expensive.

I would say 90 % of all saw dust and of course planner chips are collected in system so this saves on micron bag with a small amount of particles hit the vac bag and filter.There is a system for 5 gallon pails also .I have one but really not that satisfied with it on account of the lid did not fit real good on the ail and I think it lost to much suction,I did however run a strip of foam on pail and it helped some.It dont take long to fill a 5 gallon pail and I do lots of planning both for myself and custom planning so I neede the capacity of the thirty gallons..If you check out Grizzlytools they carry both systems.

Are you satisfied with this cyclone system? How much dust is actually collected in the collector can as opposed to the vaccuum? Does this require a larger dust collection system or can it be used with shop vacs?
