I've made a few of these as well, and use Western Red Cedar - and don't stain at all, will let them weather.

Found the receipt, it was select douglas fir, and of course 1 x 6 not 2 x 6 as written above.

Thanks for the comments guys, I actually forget what wood I used. It was the only 2 x 6 that the local Lowes had. I'll check for you the next time I am there, but it wasn't anything fancy. The stain was a Minwax spray can that was called Early American. I then used a post stain sealer as recommended on the can.

what did you use to make the bird feeders out of ? also, what kind of stain and color did you use?

Be careful, the Kreg jig can give you more projects than expected! The wife like the first bird feeder I made her and decided the nieghbors needed some too! Here's the finished production line.
