Thanks for the info Dee, that would explain my experience.

The birch plywood is softer and therefore will absorb the stain quickly as the Maple is much harder with a tighter grain making it easier to stain.

Karsten, I just saw your comment. Sorry, i've been busy.

The gel stain was nice to work with and was very forgiving during my 1st use. The gel stain was different during the application for the maple and sapele compared to the birch plywood. The gel seemed to just glide on with a nice even coating for the maple & sapele. But, the experience and results were much different for the birch plywood. Seemed like it was a little more difficult to apply on the birch and I had to pay much more attention to even coating. I hoped this info helped out. I will certainly use the gel stain again (from Woodcraft).

Awesome job, Nick!  Question about the java gel stain:  Did you have any problems staining the different types of wood in the table to match or does the gel stain alleviate that issue?  I'm rather new at the stains and am wondering.  It looks great.  I wouldn't have known it was three different wood types.

Thanks, check out my project and I posted somewhat of a step by step for the table. The top is 1/2 inch birch plywood. The side rails are also the 1/2 material. I milled up the maple for the edging (joined/plained). The edging is actually 1x2 in dimension. And the legs are 2x2 Sapele milled from rough stock. And i finished with java colored gel. If you have any other questions let me know.

Thank you. I really enjoy working with the kreg jig. It will always be in my "tool box" as I learn more woodworking and joinery.

I purchased one today and am very disappointed with it.

First the docking station is extremely cheap. The plastic is pathetic. A Lego has more…
