router sugestion to pair with kreg precision router table

Hello,

I'm new to this forum as well as woodworking and i'm looking for some advice in selecting a router to match up with the kreg  precision router table. 

If anyone has any suggestion for routers or lift kits that are compatible with this table and will make learning and using this router table easier they would be greatly appreciated.

I plan to use this router to build book cases and a toy box for my daughter.  i would also like to build some shop[ cabinets as well  for my first few projects.

Which router bits would you buy if you were starting out new?

Make sure you get a router that accepts both 1/4" & 1/2" shank bits. A 2HP or larger motor since it sounds like this tool will be a workhorse in your shop.

I started with the router bit sets with the basic roundovers, trim bits & a couple ogee bits & bought as needed from there.

Whiteside used to have a very nice starter kit.

Most of these kits are 1/4" shanks.

I just bought one of their tables as well and got a Triton to go with it as the triton has the built in lift.  Works slick

Can't go wrong with the porter cable 690. It uses 1/4" and 1/2" bits. There's is only 1 good name in router bits. That is frued aka Diablo router bits

an observation:   i am jock i live in brisbane  my bench router is hitachi 2hp i made a lifter out of an old car bottle jack and a wooden cradle to move the router up and down. it works for me being a low tech person an the fact that store bought ones are expensive (this is the scots coming out in me lol) the accuracy that it gives me is very good. router bits are very expensive in oz that is if you want good ones but there is a chinese company called "BANGGOOOD"  that sells a large variety of bits at 1/4 of the price of the name brands and in some cases you don't pay for delivery from their wharehouse stores. they have these stores world wide. type banggood into search bar and have a look may save you a whole lot of money.

I agree with the posts about the Triton, mainly because of its HP and the built in lift.  I have Porter Cables and the Kreg PRS lift which works great.  Would definitely advise to have Kreg supply the pre-drilled plate for whichever router you use.

The PRS tables by Kreg are feature packed and well designed.  I have found that the table top small unit is a great addition  for shorter pieces and nice when you  have two different cuts to make such as on cabinet rail and stile making. However, the top of the line PRS top and table are where you want to start because of the fence and top size.  For bits, you can find a good selection and supporting videos at MLCS Router on the web.

I have been using routers for 50  years now and thought that I could make a good router table for a whole lot less.  After a few usable and not so usable ones I  bought the Kreg.  It really raised my abilities to do quality work a whole lot safer than I had been able to do on my home-brew versions.  I wish I hadn't waited so long..

Be sure to get good feather boards and push sticks

I have little confidence in my ability to build my own router table and lift, so I pulled the trigger and ordered the table with feather boards, micro adjuster, casters, setup bars and a pre drilled plate.

I also ordered the 3 1/4 hp triton router.  I have heard a lot of good things about their routers, so when many of you suggested the same that made that decision very easy. 

I can't wait to get this all set up and start learning.
