Kreg Owners' Community

First time posting in the forum but I've been a Kreg user for a while.  This winter's plan is to do a psuedo-workstation for 2 which will replace a current  computer desk and then also have a book shelf on top.  I plan to keep things fairly modular in case we ever sell the house and want to move as well as for ease in getting this into the den/office.

I have my plans made up for the base unit.  Current plan is oak and oak plywood.  My questions are about finishing.  Water or oil based stain?  Stain and sealer/finish in one?  Spar vanish?  Satin, matte or glossy? I'm leaning toward a red oak color.  To me the brands don't really differentiate.   I guess I've used Minwax the most in the past.  But with Cabot and now Rustoleum having stains, I really only want to do this one time.

So I'm looking for tips and hints and a little guidance.
