Coarse screws in hardwood?

Hi all,

I'm about to assemble a small oak kitchen stand (19W x 24L x 36H) with a top and two shelves. I'm connecting 3/4" aprons to 1 7/8" legs with the aprons set 1/2" from the front. Looks like 2" screws would be a good length. The problem is that I can't find 2" fine thread screws anywhere around here and I need to finish the project. I have 2" course screws and 1 1/2 inch fine thread screws on hand. The 1 1/2 inch might work but I would prefer to get a deeper penetration; So I'm leaning toward the 2" course screws.

Any suggestions on which might be better or should I use neither?

Rich, I have not done this on a project yet....I have some soft maple 4/4 that I can try, but I bet it is not going to hold properly......you can usually get the screws pretty quick when you order them through the big ordering place online that starts with an A. (I don't know what the KJF policy is about advertising so I won't actually name them.)

Make some sample test pieces, from scrap wood.

That will give you a clue if it'll work.

Also, use screw lube on the threads.

Ken's advice about testing on some scrap is good.

A couple of thoughts:

The 1-1/2" screws should offer plenty of strength for the joints--should have 3/4" or so of penetration.

If you want to use the 2" coarse, you have the added benefit of more wood around the screw hole, which will help prevent splitting. Again, testing would be a good idea, as would lubricating the screws. Though it would create a bit more work, you could drive a 1-1/2" fine-thread screw partway in to create a pilot hole, then remove the screw and insert the 2" coarse.

Thanks for the replys. I didn't realize I had some responses. I guess my email notification isn't set right. I'm heading into the garage/shop now to do some tests. I like the idea of starting with the fine thread shorter screws and then stepping up to the longer ones. If the 1-1/2 fine thread screws work though I'd prefer that.
