Just got this from Woodworker.com. It costs about $40 with shipping, but saves paying over $6 a box for oak plugs. The other advantage is that you can cut the plugs from the same wood and the grain is going the correct way. Really simple to use.

Paul, the dowel is never going to split in the pocket hole as there is no lateral pressure at all. Even if it did, so what? The plug will still be there covering up the hole as intended.
As a proper dowel, then yes the grain orientation is critical for strength.
Thank you Rod for your reply.
Actually, after hitting send, I did think that depending on how you drill into your project, the grain pattern could actually be in any direction - inline or across, so your plugs would be suitable in crossgrain sections.
Still wary of crossgrain myself, but accept youve had no problems :)
You are, of course correct. The possibility of splitting is there, although I have not had it happen. The advantage of this is that it is the same direction the surface grain is going and blends in to be nearly unnoticeable.
Surely the dowel cutter in the drill press should cut into the end grain of your offcut?
The examples shown could split crossways, esp when being inserted into a tight pockethole, but drilling into end grain means the grain is lengthways along the plug and less prone to damage when hit.

Hi. I'm wondering if anyone has used the Woodpecker Free Hand Guard for dust collection on their bench top router table during pattern routing. How effective is it? It's adaptable to any router table. Continue

I saw the video Kreg put out for this new jig and had high hopes for it.
I purchased one today and am very disappointed with it.
First the docking station is extremely cheap. The plastic is pathetic. A Lego has more…
