Accesible Workbench

This workbench is still in progress but has come along far enough it is already invaluable. Needed a work bench I could roll under in my wheelchair and still get to the storage. used full extension slides. Created poles with hooks to access the trays. None of this would be possible with out the help of my very good friend. Each board has been milled with a planner on all edges to make the components as accurate and square as possible. The bench was hung on cleats on the wall to insure a level bench then feet added to 2 blocks added to each leg and attached after leveling front to back. Still have plans to put hardwood trin to protect the edges and encapsulate the hardboard(replaceable top) Ans some other odds and ends

Steve,  Sorry no plans. The measurements I worked out based on my height in my wheel chair and how much room I need to roll all the way under. The workbench was a large project so as you can see from the pictures. Built in in pieces. And of course I had help when it came to some assembly and installation

The power tools on the bench slide easily on the hard board so I can pull them forward when needed and push back when I need them out of the way, The Miter saw idea of incorporating it into the bench , got the idea by searching for pictures/videos on the web. Still have some work to do in this area.

Normally I will pick the best that works for me from multiple sources then add my own touches to optimize for my use.

The biggest key is patience. It takes me forever to complete tasks others can do much more quickly. Also know when you need help. Better to wait than risk injury.

Hi Mike, I love your work. I used to do a lot of intarsia and furniture work but since I lost my mobility I have been awhile getting my head right and getting back to work. You have a hugh head start on me so I will try to catch up as quick as possible. Do you have any plans or sketchup drawings? How did you get the hight is it from past experience? How about reach using power tools is that also experience? I am obviously trying to pick your brain so I don't have to spend time learning what you already know.

Well good to chat and keep the works comming.

Steve

Hi Steve, I have been in a wheelchair for about 13 years now. I have been doing a lot lately (with help from my neighbor) to improve my workshop. For me its making changes that allow me to work safely and comfortably, The workbench considerations were first and fore most height and overhang for rolling underneath. Then storage and the ability to access it. That's why there are full extension slides and poles with hooks for access. The power strips allow me access to plug in any power tool regardless of position. The workbench top is covered by hard board so its easily replaced if damaged to badly. Still finalizing details with Miter saw.

Dual purpose of space is also a consideration. I have another project listed around here somewhere where by we built a custom Router table and put it in place of the extension on the Table saw.

One of the things that is difficult is access to wood stock and it does somewhat get in the way. Currently working on Mobile Storage so it can be moved out of the way, Will be posting these photos when complete. But will post some sneak previews.
