Finishing Plywood Edges

Does anybody know of a good technique for finishing plywood edges without covering them?

Are you painting, staining, or just a clear finish?

I'm probably just going to use a clear finish but I'm most interested in a proven method to seal the fibers

on the plywood edges.I'm assuming that it is something that would have to be done with any paint or stain

if I didn't want to veneer the edges.Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You could also use Zinnser Bullseye Seal Coat (e.g. dewaxed shellac) if you are going to do a clear finish. If you are going to paint you could do the previous or use wood glue and sand.
