I ended up using a lot of pocket holes and it was a lot easier than dowels and turned out fine, I actually used wood and pocket holes on the top of the ottoman instead of the strips of belting.' It turned out fine. Sorry for the slow reply but we just finished it. It was a long time in the making. Thanks for your help.
