Strength determined by screw direction?

My wife wanted small set of shelves built.  Nothing decorative, just functional.  She said getting 1/6 boards and screwing them together would be fine. No sanding. No staining.  Just cutting ans…Continue

Wood glue. Are some better than others?

Dad did a lot of wood work and always had a bottle of Elmer's wood glue around. He also always had a can of WD-40 and 3-in-one oil. In the past several years I've become aware of different type oils…Continue

What's one interesting fact about you, your life, your garage, shop, or home?
13 years in USAF, then worked on computer systems. Retired now. Always liked working with tools. Dad loved it and showed me TONS of stuff. When he retired from the USMC he bought land and had the shell of a new house built. Then he, my brother and I did anything inside that we could. We did hard wood floors, carpet, all molding, electrical wiring (except box), AC ducts, etc. I HATED IT!!! I was 14, brother 13. Now we both can make a long list of how we have saved money in our own homes because of what we learned that one summer. Anyway, now I'm setting up my first home shop. It won't be super nice but it will be extremely functional. Till now I've always dragged my tools outside for larger projects. I's create a makeshift bench with saw horses and 2x4s and have at it. I recently bought a metal workbench that I'll be doing smaller projects on like making knife handles. Think Dremel size projects. I also made a 6' workbench to hold my sander, drill press and stuff like that. I'm finishing that up and believe it or not I used the portable Kreg to drill holes in a 2x4 to put up up a back board that wasn't included in the plans. Normally I'd have drilled for that during assemble buy since it was already put together the portable Kreg made adding that piece SUPER easy. I used the 6" automax clamp to hold the 1x4 in place when screwing the screws in.

My grandson is 5 now and I'm looking forward to him helping me for a few years.
