Thanks for all the kind comments, everybody. Leslee, I used shellac inside, since it has very little odor after it dries, and I didn't want anything placed inside of the trunk to pick up the smell of a finish. On the outside, I applied a shellac sanding sealer, followed by a Watco Danish Oil finish, blending about 4 parts Golden Oak with 1 part Cherry. I flooded it with the oil, let it sit for about an hour, then wiped it dry. I waited about a week before wiping on 2 coats of General Finishes Oil and Urethane satin as the final finish.
If you sat it next to an old steamer trunk people would think you copied the old one. Nice job. I like the color contrast with the walnut and oak. The two woods sure go good together. What kind of finish did you put on it? I'm really curious.
Looks fantastic,I built three last year for Christmas gifts
Very attractive.
Looks like a fun to build project.
Well done !

I purchased one today and am very disappointed with it.
First the docking station is extremely cheap. The plastic is pathetic. A Lego has more…
