Hi Michael, 

It is a product called Grip Seal. I think it might be a South African product. http://www.gripseal.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=art... 

I suppose you can use anything as long as you are flattening the coats (extremely light sanding) between the coats then your last coat will come out with a awesome finish. I also sprayed my finish.

what kind of finish did you use on the paneling and the shelf tops?

Hi Sue, thanks. This is really a simple project that you can have the store cut to size for you and knock it together in a few hours.

I used a sheet of MDF for the whole project. The construction is made up of three main components namely the back panel, face frame and the shelves.

The measurements will really depend on the size of the bed you are going to have the headboard stand behind. This was for a queen sized bed so here are the basic measurements for that. Please measure your own first as this was a rough guide that I used.

If you have a look at the other photos that I included in the project you will see that I took the cut sheet of MDF and routed v-shaped grooves into the panel 3" apart to resemble tongue and groove panels. Be sure to start from the center of each section and work outwards from there to have even spaces on the sides. Wow!  This is beautiful.  I would love something like this, maybe on a smaller scale.  I'm a real beginner - do you happen to have plans or instructions you'd be willing to share?
