Washed it with Dawn, hanging by the pool equipment in full sun, holding nozzles, little plastic thingies, zip ties, all the things you can never find when you need them

That is pretty cool, Angie. I wouldn't think of making a shelf out of a piece of pallet. Well, about the skunk smell.... I would put it outside and hose it down and let the sun and wind get rid of the smell. Then finish it with some sanding and any type of finish you prefer. Also if you know how to do wood burning I would dress it up a bit with some beautiful accents or what ever you want. I still say that is a low cost and money saving idea because wood is so expensive these days. Great job!!!!!

Angie, Nice to see another lady building and posting project photos.  You do have some talent that will grow as your interest develops.  I do like your "first project ever" as it is something to be proud of and something you can look back on remembering how all the questions of "can I do this and how do I do this" must have been in your project plans and construction phase at some time or another.  This will be the reminder and the answer of thoes thoughts.  It is definately a nice looking project as are your other three you posted.

As far as the skunk smell I would not worry about it and look at it as a "One of a Kind" piece.  ":One of a Kind Piece" is something that everyone wants to create at one time or another in their career.  Just tell everyone that it is made from a new rare type of wood called skunk wood......  Welcome aboard the community and enjoy your journey.   Thanks for sharing your work.

You  have to love  free wood even if it smells. I would try shellac and it would also make a nice finish. Great job on the shelf Angie.
