Made entirely from leftover scraps, love free! I'm poly'ing them now, I used my Kreg on the back to make a "step in shelf" instead of pounding the stake, you just step on it and it goes right in.

My "old" tombstones....cut a bit of sponge, and sponge on grey, black and white paint. To get the pebble effect, light sand to the wood, don't clean of dust and then paint right on it to the sponge paint dabbing, and wiping off.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1180697329280.28198.15836.... That's the old fashioned way. Plus one can of the stone in usa is 12 bucks! Just in case. good luck, and post pics please

Great Info Angie,

I went to the localpaint shop here in Brisbane Qld Australia, afer reading Chris's reply, however I could not buy any Valspa products listed on the DIY link Valspa actually ownes Wattyl and I got a Wattyl

Stone effect "Soft Chalk" to try out.

Anyway whilist I was checking out the "other" paint finishes I was shown Rust-oleum Metalic paints in spray cans so I purchased 1 x Pure Gold and 1 x Aged Copper to "experiment" with.

Its interesting that you mention Grey stone Rustoleum, sonot one for giving upI will return to the paint shop and see if they can suppy the mixes you have quoted.

I made two tombstones and have undercoated them at this stage, so upon completion I will post them in the photos section so you can see the results.

Thanks for thre good info

Regards

this is my 3rd time making tombstones, my goal, world domination....or at least the whole front yard covered with tombstones. Chris Hill, tried the step in on this years after checking diy, gave it a try. Just love DIY network, always like trying out new things from there, best ideas. Much easier with the step in the back rather than "predrilling" a hole in the ground for the stakes.

Robert, Used primer, Kilz, mixed in 25% black til I got the gray I liked, then went over with Gray Stone Rustoleum. Works amazingly well, esp since last years stones I faux stoned with many layers and sponging technique. The Gray Stone cut the time in half! I was able to knock out 6 of them in a night and a half. It's a spray can, dries superfast too. one thing though, when  you poly them it has to be a spray poly, such as Varathane outdoor Satin Clear finish. Tried to brush on poly and moved the stones around :) Hope that helps, and hope to see more tombstones!

Angie:

Looks like you used the DIY Network plan - http://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/halloween-decoration-how-to-make-a... - as a guide. If so, what did you think of the plan?
