In order to make this, I used a 24" by 20" by .5" board of solid Aspen, and a Poplar 1.5" Square dowel rod I picked up at Menard's. The bases are cut as follows 18" square, 15" square, 12" square and 9" square. The dowel rods are cut to 5" lengths. Pocket holes drilled at the .5" setting and I used 1 1/4" coarse screws. The biggest issue I had was getting the Aspen  to stop soaking in the polyurethane, it took about seven coats to get it where the wood wouldn't soak it in. In retrospect I would not have used aspen, although a pretty wood, it was cantankerous when trying to a add finish.
