Oak is tricky because of the pores. You could try sealing with shellac before the stain.

gotcha, it was made out of oak hardwood plywood. i will look for the sanding sealer next time i go to the store and give it a try

Did you use sanding sealer, it helps keep the stain more uniform. Also you might try a gel stain if it is a soft wood or porious wood, it does not penitrate the pours like a penitrating stain and eliminates most of the dark spots, works well on end grain.

thanks. not a big fan of the dark stain. had some issues with it being lighter in some spots...i resanded and tried again only to have the same effect. any ideas?
