Jeff, yes I set these right on the carpet. I opted not to hang them to the wall because I wanted them to be easily removable, kind of like an entertainment center just in case I needed to pull them out for any reason (like extending the wood floors into that room.) I went into it knowing that I may have to cut back the carpet buy I got lucky as the carpet wasn't really and issue in leveling the pieces. I built all 10 pieces in my basement taking care in making sure the were exactly the same (within reasonable tolerances) and the tight fit of all the pieces helps. I'll be bolting the pieces together in inconspicuous places to clean up any misalignments but I'm sure they would all be just as level sitting on a flat smooth surface. So to answer your question, if it's going to be a PERMANENT fixture (which would usually be built as ONE piece, cut the carpet out and set it to the subfloor and build it to the wall. If you think you may need to pull them out for any reason you can try setting them on the carpet but this way (the way I did it) is a lot more time consuming building so many individual units as well as the added expense of the extra wood to do that. And of course leveling it on the carpet... Hope this helps let me know if you need anything else!

Denny,  did you set these right on your carpet or did you build a base attached to your wall?  I am going to build something similar to these but I was not sure what to do where the carpet is concerned.  Thanks in advance,

And Jay, the main reason I chose the design from my upper cabinets being over-sized in comparison to the base cabinets is because I am tying a desk perpendicularly into the center cabinet. That's the next project!

Jay, thanks for your compliments. The short time I've been on this site, I've noticed you're the man to impress around here so I greatly appreciate your critique! I hope to make you all proud!

Denny this is well designed and your construction is well executed.  For this being your first project you are doing well and your project is well on its way to becoming a professional quality.  I like how you have extended the center part of the case.  This  puts it in a class of its own giving way to an eye catching effect.  The short compartments with the tall upper cabinet openings is  very nice.  It  demands the viewer to take notice of its elegence.  Very well done.  Thank you for showing your work.

Next is drawers, doors, crown, base and embellishments... then on to sanding and stain. (It took me every night for a week to figure out how to get maple dark and uniform. (You can see the little sample on left of the center piece.
