Joe, no plans I used the picture above, the one not painted, as inspiration. Had the butcher block top and built the island under it using the dimensions of the butcher block as a guide.

Thanks, Don.  I not used the Butcher Block treatment but have read about it.  It is supposed to be quite effective at protecting butcher block tops.

@Ken: the beeswax adds to the water proofing as well as makes the service less slick.  Unlike the mineral oil, the beeswax doesn't soak as deeply into the wood.  Also the beeswax & mineral oil must be heated together and applied to be effective.

The top is yellow pine, I taped off every other strip and stained it Walnut for the darker color and finished it with a Butcher Block treatment I bought at Lowes. 6 coats on top and 2 underneath, had to wait at least 6 hours between coats, with a light sanding between coats. It is mostly decorative as my wife uses a clear cutting board set on top of the island for serious cutting or chopping.

Joe,

What's are the advantages of using the beewax?

I like to use ''oak stair tread'' stock, for some table tops.

Thanks Don.  How about the top, looks like two different or did you stain one and not the other? Pine is always a good choice when you're going to paint a project anyway and what I figured you used.  Just curious, I'm always curious as to woods other woodworkers are using.

Although many use hardwoods for cutting board tops, if it's functional and not just for looks, it really needs a softer wood to keep from damaging the knives.  My choice is usually cypress, that is readily available in this area but yellow pine or western cedar works well also.  I don't know what you used to finish, but I finish cutting tops with foodgrade mineral oil and beeswax (about 10-15% beeswax).  I heat it on very low heat, just hot enough to melt the beeswax (if it's smoking, it's too hot) and wipe on with a cotton cloth, then buff after it cools (15-20 min).  It last 6-12 months depending on usage of course.

Do you have plans? source?  I may build my daughter one for her kitchen.

Thanks Ken....Joe, the body of the island is made from clear pine, as are the legs. The shelves are pine glue-ups. Since we were going to paint it from the start, I couldn't see using a more expensive wood.

Don,
Very nice!

Would you share with us the woods you used? Great looking project. I've found that I've all but abandoned other types of joinery since I've started using pocket screws again. I tried several years ago but back then no one had a jig that worked well and I gave up on them until the Kreg jig. Now there are very few places I don't use pocket screws.

I purchased one today and am very disappointed with it.

First the docking station is extremely cheap. The plastic is pathetic. A Lego has more…
