This is a bunk Bed I built fot my Granddaughter, it is built almost entirely from 3/4" MDF, and almost all joints are made with pocket hole joinery, it was assembled in my shop, taken apart & reassembled in my granddaughters bedroom

As you assumed I used the length & width of a twin mattress for the top & the opening in the front will take a double bed when she grows out of the upper bunk.
