This is a 4' garden box made from 3/4"x\6"x48" boards. Once it is filled with soil I will be laying a grid on top marking 12"x12" squares. Each square will contain a different fruit or vegetable.

Sweet I did the same thing with cedar. I made 2 - 4' x 10' x 12''. The dirt was the most expensive part (and labor intensive part). I also treated it with a soy stain/wood protector to hopefully get a few more growing seasons out of it. i used the kreg on some of the construction utilizing the weather resistant screws. i have some pics on my page.

Landscape fabric, very inexpensive to do. The lumber I picked for $20, 8 1"x8"x14' and 10 1"x8"x7 1/2'. The landscape fabric cost $5 for a 3'x50' roll. The soil will be the most expensive part. 1/3 Peat Moss, 1/3 Vermiculite, and 1/3 blended compost. I will be making some compost containers today to tomorrow.

Very good observation! I was tearing down a swimming pool deck and our dog was playing with railing spindles and got sick. The vet started treating him for epilepsy but we found out later that it was arsenic poisoning from the treated wood. Sometimes I have a "senior moment" and ask dumb questions. Is the lattice in the background part of a lid for the box? I would need something like that to keep the cat out of the box!

I was told that treated lumber would make the soil toxic. (Thankfully I was told this before I invested more $ than I had to) Please post pics before harvesting! yum!

Good question, according the to author of the square foot gardening concept treated lumber could tain the crops.

Nice idea but shouldn't you have used treated lumber?
