I was just looking at my pics and noted I also used caulking around all of the edges before I sealed.

Thanks! Actually now that I think about it, I used Zinner shellac first, then paint /stain, then poly. When I made the top front it just did not fit well…I also did not like the wood grain pattern of the ply-oak, I put oak veneer (Menards) on the front using a section I liked. I glued this on with 3M spray... trim router, etc. I have more projects on my website if ya wanna take a look.

that really is a nice piece - not even a fish tank owner, but the craftmanship is top notch!

Thank you! The design is off the net from a guy named “rocketengineer” http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1567110&high...

The design is made so the joints don’t stress holding the weight. A bit different then what I would of thought. Seeing what comes from the fish stores these stands are built well. No mortise, tennons, etc. Mostly butt joints! The top carcass was made using pocket screws and then skinned.

One thing I never liked about store bought stands is how low they are… they all say it is for safety but I believe its cost. I built mine about 8 inches higher so you can just stand and see the tank comfortably. If one can push over a 1000 pound tank due to the higher height we have other problemsJ

It is skinned with ½” oak plywood and the front is solid oak. Open in the back. The stand is built using 2x4’ which I ran though the planner on ALL sides. There is no center down support but on your 150 gallon I believe you will need at least one. From what I’ve learned all the weight of a fish tank is on the 4 corners. The tank is sitting directly on the 2x4’s.

I used white mildew resistant paint inside the stand (highly recommend to brighten it up),  Cabaret stain and used polyurethane (3 coats) over the entire thing. So far it working out great. I did not make the doors (needed to finish this quickly and well just did not want to take on the extra task J). I remembered Menards sells unfinished oak doors and worked my front face around them. In face, all the wood is from Menards.

Read that thread, lots of great info there!

That is beautiful!!  Did you skin it with 1/2"?  The crown molding adds a great touch!  What did you use for the platform the tank sits on?  I would assume it needs to be as waterproof as possible?  I need to finish my stand for a 150 gallon and looking for ideas....  Thanks for posting!!!
