John checking in from Hampton Va. Im a retired construction worker (just kidding). I worked in construction after i dropped out of high school. Started my own construction business doing government and residential. Had some sense that the market was going to bomb (i was right) and decided to go back to school. I have worked as a handyman through school doing everything from remodels to custom doors. I should be out in a year with a Mechanical Engineering degree, something a little more reliable than the housing market.
Hello,
I am a retired Corporate Pilot. I flew all over the world for wealthy business men and their families. I have lived in 4 foreign countries and 11 states in my 43 year career of flying. It was a great life and sometimes very exciting. I have been to all 50 States, 59 different countries and numerous Islands around the world spending time in each one seeing sights that many people only dream about or see on the National Geographic Channel
Now I am setting up my home workshop to do what I have done even longer then fly. That is woodworking. I started in shop class in Ridgefield Park, NJ back in 1958 and have continued working with wood ever since as a hobby and for even 5 years, when based in Hawaii, as a part time business between flights making Stretcher Frames for artists. Woodworking is something I hope to be able to do till the very end. It is enjoyable, fun and I have made some furniture for ourselves and kids that still looks good to me even though it is 20 years old.
The worst thing I can think of is the schools have abandoned so many wood shops and art classes in favor of other types of classes that really does nothing to keep a student motivated to stay in school and learn something that may help him or her in life. Woodshops helps in so many ways right down to drafting, computers, CAD systems, mathematics, fractions, adding, subtracting, budgeting, discipline, safety, etc. College is great for those who can go or want to go or are planning on a career in a discipline that requires it.
There are colleges out there teaching woodworking as a vocation and art form and business but not enough and definitely not enough secondary and middle schools teaching it and the rest of the trades.
I am sorry, I got off the subject of what I did for a living and that would have been the United States Marine Corps and Corporate Aviation.
Thanks for reading.

I am happy to report that my 17 year old Grandson, who is a Senior this year is taking Woodworking, it is his 2nd year and he loves it! He will go into Boat Building next semester, so who knows where he will go from there. This is why we moved to Tennessee almost 20 years ago, the schools are great! He is a good kid, he helped me build our deck when he was 14 yrs old and hasn't stopped since.
Thank you Sue. I appreciate it.

Thanks for your service, Eddy. And, off subject or not, I agree with your thoughts on the demise of woodshops in schools.

Where in Tennesse is the school. That is really great to get that kind of training and be able to get subjects that inspire and teach. I wish your Grandson great success and happiness throughout his life with what he is learning. I wish there were more schools like this around the country.

Eddy I am also a corporate pilot living in Tampa. It is a great job and like you have seen and done things that most people never get the opportunity to see or do. I also started woodworking in high school. I was only lucky enough to get into the class for one quarter, still have the book ends I made.
Good luck in retirement and takes for your service to the country!!

Hi. I'm wondering if anyone has used the Woodpecker Free Hand Guard for dust collection on their bench top router table during pattern routing. How effective is it? It's adaptable to any router table. Continue

I saw the video Kreg put out for this new jig and had high hopes for it.
I purchased one today and am very disappointed with it.
First the docking station is extremely cheap. The plastic is pathetic. A Lego has more…
