Working on a project where i laser etched an image and then used shoe polish as a filler to darken the etching.  was wondering if anyone has used this technique and then used a spray lacquer/poly to put a shine/seal it in?

i did make a test piece and am more concerned if it would work and how long it would possibly hold up?

I have made signs with a router and used a magic marker to darken the letters and sprayed lacquer over it and it worked just fine not sure about the shoe polish.

In Cherokee N.C. There is a lady that sells signs and things she makes using shoe polish, I got one for my in-laws camper, (sign with their name and home town) and it has done great for almost 2 years now. It is out in the weather all summer and part of the winter. Poly'd over the shoe polish.

After applying the shoe polish spray two light coats of clear shellac. Let dry and cure. Next apply your coats of non-poly lacquer. Let dry and cure. If item is to be used out doors then subitistute with marine grade varnish. All of these finishes should be sprayed on for best finish. Watch your temps and humidity factors and mixing ratios. Do not forget your viscosity as well and test before applying.
