I hope I can explain this...........

I am building some floor standing cabinets (kitchen) out of 19mm laminated waterproof MDF.

I will cut a 10mm deep 19mm Rabbet in the side panels so they sit (rest) on the cabinet floor, i want to drive a kreg screw from underneath the cabinet floor (hidden) into/through the joint. is this a good approach?

Diagram on request if it isn't clear

If I understand what you have explained correctly John, I dont think the screw will have enough penetration into the second piece which has been rabbeted to give you any holding strength, I think that your better off not to cut the rabbet and butt the bottom panel up against the side panel.
Hi - yes that is exactly what I am referring to, in hindsight this is the same as having a 19mm base and a 10mm side - I may reduce the rabbet so the side panel is 12.5 mm and use the 5/8 setting and 1" screws as indicated in the attached guide. The joint will be glued so this is only to hold it in place whilst the glue drys and it is supported elsewhere when the cabinet takes shape. Thanks for the picture.

Hi John - I don't think you need the screw at all. I'm not familiar with the water resistant MDF but the stuff I can get "erupts" around where the screw enters the recieving piece forcing the joint open. It looks like there is plenty of glue surface and should be fine if properly fitted and clamped.

I'll do a test first, I may need to nail it as clamping may be a problem due to the width which is 1200mm - i don't have the sash clamps
Your rabbt sounds like it is to deep if you are going to use screews should have been half that.

On 19mm material what would you have sitting on the base, just a small lip say 5mm ??

Sounds like your rabbit should have about half that 5 mm if you are using screws. Normal rabbits are not more than half 9.5mm.

Hi Doug

I did a trial run yesterday, it didn't work.

I am an amateur so I can't get my head around the toe kick concept.

Regards

John
