I am in the process of building a picnic table and stain all the boards . I decided not to edge glue the top with my pocet joints so no screws show on top. I was not happy with the strength of the joints not being glued. I going to make  a suggestion . If some of you try this I think it will be helpfull  on softwood projects also before you put your pocket screws in put a little wood glue on the threads. It appeared to have almost the strength as gluing the butt joint. What wondering is will the joint be even stronger on our butt joints?

Yes settings were ok it was strong but not like when you glue the joint.
Personally, I find that anytime I use a soft wood, be it pine, cedar, or something similar I found the same problem with the joints not being as "tight" as they are with hard wood, I think this is the fault of the wood itself as it tends to give a little more.. simple solution.. give it a bead of glue...
